App overview

Open in AI

After signing in you land on the dashboard. From there you can reach every other area of the app. This page shows you what exists, which area to use for what, and how to find your way around.

Folders are the frame for everything. A folder stands for one topic, one subject or one exam. It holds everything that belongs to that topic:

  • Cards you study with
  • Sources, meaning your material such as PDFs, lecture notes or your own notes
  • Notes you write or draw yourself
  • Tasks and dates coming up for that topic
  • Tools you use for that topic

If you are unsure where something belongs: it belongs in the folder that matches the topic. Everything else follows from that.

  • Dashboard – your home page. It shows your daily progress, your workspaces and what is next. More in Dashboard.
  • Cards – this is where new cards are created, either written by you or generated from your material. See Creating cards.
  • Learning – the study rounds themselves. You pick a mode and work through your cards. See Learning modes and Spaced repetition.
  • Calendar – plan dates and tasks and see both in one view. See Calendar.
  • Tasks – your to-dos, sorted by due date and priority. See Tasks.
  • Learning chat – the chat for your folder. You ask questions about your material, have connections explained and derive cards from it. See Chat.
  • Notes – capture your own content, as structured text or drawn freely. See Notes.
  • Sources and files – upload, organise and view your material. See Sources and Files and explorer.
  • Tools – individual helpers for concrete jobs such as calculating, converting or sketching. See Workbench.
  • Achievements – badges for streaks, card counts and special moments. See Achievements.
  • Settings – everything you adjust in the app and in your account. See Settings.
  • Pricing – which plans exist and which limits they come with. See Plans and limits.
  • Help – give feedback, report problems and suggest improvements. See Support.

This is how the areas work together when you start a new topic:

  1. Create a folder – one folder for the topic, for example “Biochemistry”.
  2. Add material – put lecture notes, PDFs or your own notes into the folder.
  3. Understand – ask questions about the material in the learning chat and clear up anything unclear.
  4. Derive cards – create cards from what you understood.
  5. Study – work through the cards regularly.
  6. Plan – keep tasks and exam dates in view in the calendar.
  7. Check progress – see how your routine develops.

You do not have to start at step 1. If you already have material, start with adding it. If you just want to revise quickly, jump straight into studying.

  • Sidebar – holds your main areas (Dashboard, Cards, Calendar, Learning), your folder list below that and your account menu at the bottom. On narrow screens you can show and hide it.
  • Folder list – every folder shows how many cards and notes it contains and when you last studied in it. The plus button creates a new folder.
  • Header – shows where you are and contains the search plus back and forward.
  • Search – the Search button or the shortcut Ctrl + K (on a Mac Cmd + K) opens the command palette. It searches actions, tools, cards, notes, tasks, dates, folders, pages and settings at once. Inside a folder it also finds that folder’s content. Besides searching you can type commands, for example to add a task or start a focus session right away.
  • Account menu – your plan, Settings, News, Achievements, Help and sign-out.
  • Back and forward – like in a browser, so you can jump between areas.

  • Tours – short walkthroughs of individual areas. You find them in Settings under Account, and you can restart them at any time. Some tours start on their own the first time you open an area.
  • Study companion – a mascot that greets you on the dashboard, shows you around and reacts to your study rounds. You pick it and can put it to sleep.
  • Focus – a focus session for a fixed amount of time, with remaining time, pause and resume. It lets you work concentrated for a while without getting sidetracked.
  • News – product announcements and notes. Unread items are shown to you directly; everything stays readable under News in the account menu.

Do I have to use every area? No. The areas build on each other, but each one also works on its own. If you only want to revise, you only need a folder and the learning area.

What is the difference between cards and learning? Cards is where cards are created and managed. Learning is the round in which you work through them.

Where is my data? Your folders, cards, notes and settings belong to your account and are available on your devices. What you control about that is described in Privacy.

I got lost. How do I get back? Use Dashboard in the sidebar or Back in the header. If you cannot find a page any more, the search with Ctrl + K helps.
