Books and audio

Open in AI

A learning book turns your material into a continuous work: chapter by chapter, with examples, counter-examples and exercises. On top of that you can generate a recording you can listen to.

Learning books and learning audio belong to the higher plans. If you lack access, the app tells you when you open them.

Via Create proposal you describe under What should the book contain? what it is about. Name three things if you can: topic, prior knowledge and learning goal. An example from the app: “Cellular respiration for the exam, basics known, focus on connections and practice tasks.”

The way leads through three steps, which the app also summarises itself:

  1. Describe the learning goal.
  2. Review the structure.
  3. Learn chapter by chapter.

First a book proposal appears — still without chapters. Here you correct:

  • the title of the book,
  • the scope,
  • the prior knowledge / level.

Confirm proposal turns it into the chapter structure. You review that as well: it shows the objectives per chapter, and only Open learning book creates the book. You then generate chapters deliberately — you do not have to create the whole book at once.

The book opens with the contents on the left and the page on the right.

  • Select chapter via the chapter overview. You can collapse and expand it and search via Search chapters for a chapter or objective.
  • Generate page – a chapter marked ready to generate is only filled when you ask. Finished content can be used as often as you like without generating anything new.
  • Mark as read or Read and continue takes you to the next page. The reading progress shows X of Y pages read.
  • Previous and Next chapter navigate like in a book; alongside there is Generate deep dive, Reload and a short prompt to explain the material from memory.

Important: read is not the same as mastered. The app says so explicitly and points you to the exercises or the learning path.

Within a chapter, explanations and exercises alternate:

  • Example and counter-example – the material from two sides.
  • Comprehension questions – quiz formats such as multiple choice, true/false, short answer and cloze. Choice questions are checked directly; open answers you compare against the model answer.
  • Transfer task – you answer freely, can reveal hints step by step and finally show the model answer.
  • Flashcards – Reveal answer, then Known or Practise again.
  • For many blocks the app shows the source references the content came from.

Your answers are cached on the device so you do not have to retype everything. Individual blocks can be regenerated if a piece of content does not fit.

Via Generate deep dive or For deepening extra material is created for a point from the chapter — useful when an explanation was too brief.

You can turn a book into a learning path. Chapters and objectives then become path steps. That is the route when you do not want to read but to be questioned.

The book page includes Create learning audio. Before you start, the dialog shows:

  • the estimated duration and how many chapter markers will be created,
  • the estimated learning energy it costs,
  • a note if unfinished chapters exist that have to be created first.

Create entire book as audio starts the recording. It runs in the background — you can leave the page and come back later. A progress indicator shows how many sections are done. If creation stops, Continue creation picks up where it left off; sections already created are reused.

The recording captures the state of the book at the time of creation. Later changes to the book do not alter the stored version — if that applies, the app tells you that you are listening to the older version.

Listening again costs no learning energy. The generation itself is recorded as a book in your learning energy; playback is not.

The player offers:

  • Play and pause,
  • −15 and +15 seconds,
  • previous and next chapter plus a chapter markers list to jump to,
  • a slider for the playback position,
  • playback speed,
  • volume and mute,
  • read the transcript.

Your listening position is saved. The library under Learning audio lists all recordings and is searchable; from there you can return to the book or go straight into the audio.

  • Generating costs learning energy, using does not. Reading, practising existing exercises and listening are free — generating anew is not.
  • Reading is not proof. For “really solid” you need the exercises or a learning path.
  • Versions stay stable. A recording always sounds the way the book was when it was created.
  • The book does not replace your sources. Your original material stays even if you delete the book.

Do I have to generate all chapters? No. You can generate and read precisely the chapters you need right now.

Do I lose my sources if I delete a book? No. Deleting removes the book and the reading progress; your sources stay.

Why does my audiobook sound different from the book? Because the recording is a fixed version. Changes to the book do not retroactively change the audio.

Can I listen to individual chapters? Yes, via the chapter markers in the player you jump straight to a chapter.
