Flashcard Motion has two learning modes. Both work with the same cards, but they differ in how the order comes about: one goes through your cards in sequence, the other serves what is due first.
Getting started: three steps
Section titled “Getting started: three steps”When you start a session you go through three steps:
- Learning mode – choose Classic mode or Spaced Repetition.
- Folder – choose the material for this session. Only folders containing cards are shown; each folder states how many cards it holds.
- Session – check the settings for this session and start.
If you start from inside a folder, the folder is already fixed and cannot be changed. The session then stays limited to that folder.
Classic mode
Section titled “Classic mode”Show question, flip, see answer.
- You read the question and think about it.
- You flip the card — by click, tap or the space bar.
- You rate yourself: Wrong or Correct.
- The next card appears.
In classic mode you work through the cards in the order they sit in the folder — or shuffled, if you turned that on. This round counts towards your daily goal but does not affect the review schedule.
Spaced Repetition
Section titled “Spaced Repetition”Repeat due cards first.
Here the order is not set by the folder but by the review schedule. You get the cards that are due first, then new cards within your daily allowance.
- You read the question and think about it.
- You flip the card.
- You rate how hard it felt — Again, Hard, Good or Easy.
- The app schedules from that when this card comes back.
What the four ratings mean and how to use them well is described in Spaced repetition.
Important: in this mode only what is actually due counts. Cards that are not due yet do not appear.
The two modes compared
Section titled “The two modes compared”| Classic mode | Spaced Repetition | |
|---|---|---|
| Order | as in the folder, optionally shuffled | by due date |
| Rating | Wrong / Correct | Again / Hard / Good / Easy |
| Effect on the schedule | none | sets the next due date |
| Typical use | working through material, before an exam | retaining long term |
Card interaction: static or swipe
Section titled “Card interaction: static or swipe”In classic mode you decide how you rate cards:
- Static – flip the card by click and rate with the buttons.
- Swipe – after revealing, swipe left for Wrong, right for Correct. On a phone this is the natural option.
Your choice also applies to future sessions until you change it.
Shuffling cards
Section titled “Shuffling cards”Shuffle cards breaks the folder’s order. That helps when you would otherwise orient yourself by the sequence instead of the content.
During the session
Section titled “During the session”During a round you have everything in view and at hand:
- Progress – how many cards you have done and how many are left.
- Success rate – what percentage of your ratings were correct.
- Average time per card – how long you take on average. A good indicator of whether you are still paying attention.
- Pause and Resume – the session waits for you.
- End – you stop and see the summary.
- Undo – if you misclicked, take the last rating back and rate again.
If you switch tabs or close the view, the session pauses automatically. Your progress is not lost.
Keyboard shortcuts
Section titled “Keyboard shortcuts”| Key | Effect |
|---|---|
Space or Enter |
flip the card |
← or 1 |
Wrong |
→ or 2 |
Correct |
1 |
Again |
2 |
Hard |
3 |
Good |
4 |
Easy |
The rating shortcuts apply in Spaced Repetition after revealing. In a classic round with Swipe interaction you swipe instead of using keys.
At the end of the session
Section titled “At the end of the session”After the last card you see your evaluation:
- Study time, correct answers, success rate and the number of reviews.
- In Spaced Repetition also how many cards stayed open and how many you rated Again.
- An assessment of how the round went — from “completed confidently” to “consolidate now”.
Alongside it, fitting next steps: Repeat round, Continue reviews or Finish learning.
Where to find the modes
Section titled “Where to find the modes”- Sidebar → Learning – free choice of mode and folder.
- Folder → Learning – the folder is fixed, you only choose the mode.
- Dashboard → Your next study step – takes you straight into the fitting session when something is due.
Common questions
Section titled “Common questions”Is there an exam simulation? No. There is classic mode and Spaced Repetition. For exam preparation, classic mode is best for working through material and Spaced Repetition for retaining it long term.
Why do I see no folder to choose from? Only folders with cards are offered. First create cards or add cards to a folder.
Does an abandoned round count? Your ratings so far are saved; for the review schedule every rating counts individually. The round itself is evaluated when you end it.
Can I switch mode afterwards? Yes, end the session and start a new one in the mode you want. The summary shows you what is still open.
